Albona Ristorante Istriano
Though not as well known as nearby destinations as Venice or Zagreb, Albona, Istria is a beautiful region in its own right, on a peninsula shared by Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia. This hilltop town has been influenced by the cuisines of all three of those countries, producing a unique blend of flavors that have since been brought to America's West Coast.
At Albona Ristorante Istriano, as in Albona the city, the food is most heavily influenced by Venetian cuisine. But Eastern-European ingredients make unexpected appearances—pork loin is stuffed with sauerkraut and gnocchi are pan-fried and spiced with cumin. The signature dish, arosto de coniglio, is a true marriage of flavors: a half braised rabbit with onions, juniper berries, honey, brown sugar, and balsamic vinegar served with broiled polenta and baby carrots. Desserts are equally diverse—there's both biscotti and strudel—as is a wine list that includes selections from Italy, Croatia, and California. All this is served inside a cottage-like building that's equal parts quaint and elegant.
