When the worst fire in Watsonville's history tore through the Appleton Hotel in 2005, it nearly destroyed the 1912 landmark. Thankfully, the building was able to be restored, and not only did it get a new name—the Wall Street Inn—it also got a new restaurant. The Appleton Grill, which just opened in 2013, serves as both an homage to the building's past and a nod to modern tastes.
With its bright white accents and walls the color of lemon custard, you'd almost expect to find a soda jerk behind the bar instead of a bartender. Sepia-toned photos of historic Watsonville sprinkled throughout the dining room echo that nostalgia, as does a menu of comfort foods such as Angus-beef burgers and tuna melts. Beyond the dining room is the ballroom—formerly the hotel's lobby—a grand space supported by scrolled columns and warmed by a massive fireplace. The space can host all manner of special events, ranging from quinceaneras and wedding receptions to gigantic games of musical chairs.
