Houseplants give homes a touch of nature, just as discarded couches lend a homey feeling to forests. Bring the outdoors indoors with this Groupon.

$15 for $30 Worth of Succulents and Cacti

The selection includes Tanzanian Monadenium magnificum ($12), which boasts pale-green petals in a 5-inch pot, as well as Ferocactus cylindraceous ($30), a barrel cactus that sprouts yellow flowers and multicolored needles in a 10-inch pot.

Arid Lands Greenhouses

Arid Lands Greenhouses curates a stock of foreign succulents and cacti for avid and casual collectors. Owners and chlorophyll-enthusiasts Bob Webb and Toni Yocum travel extensively throughout Africa and the Middle East, building relationships with the regions' nurseries while seeking out intriguing seeds and cuttings to import back to their greenhouses. The two oversee 18,000 square feet of greenhouse space, where they care for plants until they become mature enough to change their own soil. Their extensive collection even attracts interest from area botanists looking to perform research with some of the more obscure species in stock.

The correct answer to #2 is "never heard of them." I bought the Groupon on a whim. Arid Lands is way across town from where I live and I just figured it might be a good way to get some plants and see what is on that side of town. It's a hard place to find; it's behind another building and you have to see the sign at the end of the driveway. The ladies who work there are very helpful and knowledgeable about their stock. They helped me find plants best adapted to my microclimate . They have lots of interesting agaves, aloes, and exotic succulents from southern Africa. Prices are reasonable and quality is high. I spent 50 or 6 bucks on top of my Groupon and figured it was well spent.
