Stop At: Philadelphia Alley
This is home to one of Charleston’s most famous ghost stories—that of the Whistling Doctor. Legend has it that Dr. Joseph Brown Ladd, who was known for whistling, was saved from murder and robbery by a stranger, Ralph Isaacs, and the two soon became best friends. But Isaacs grew jealous of Ladd’s success as a doctor and challenged him to a duel on the brick-lined Philadelphia Alley, and that’s where the doctor was slain. Here on this historical alley, tour-takers seek out cold spots using infrared and ambient thermometers, seek apparitions using laser grid pens, take EMF readings, and record audio for the faint sound of the doctor whistling when the sun goes down.
