The pen is mightier than the sword, but that’s only because the pen spends three nights per week bench-pressing paper clips. Stay in tiptop sharp-object-dodging shape with today’s Groupon: for $25, you get a punch card for any 10 martial-arts fitness classes at Combat Fitness (a $100 value).
Combat Fitness, an indoor-outdoor martial-arts training facility, helps adults and kids wrestle fitness goals into submission at more than 40 weekly classes. Led by nearly a dozen instructors, including three veteran UFC teachers and a group of collegiate wrestlers, classes come with individual attention and build the confidence and discipline needed to sing karaoke while taking the SATs. During mixed-martial-arts classes, kids aged 8–15 absorb elements of jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and kickboxing as they master takedowns, leveraging skills, and elbow strikes. Like handymen, children progress through a rainbow of belt colors as they hone their skills. Adult students torch calories and tone arms and abs as they rehearse jabs and defensive maneuvers during co-ed boxing sessions and women’s kickboxing workouts. Classes take place in the morning and evening, and an open gym invites fighters to practice their moves on weekday afternoons.
Students must wear gloves, hand wraps, and mouthpieces during boxing sessions and other activities that involve contact with other fighters or buns coming out of the oven at 450 degrees. Protective gear may be rented or purchased at the gym for a nominal fee.
Combat Fitness’s coaching staff boasts a number of professional pugilists, most notably UFC bantamweight fighter Scott Jorgensen. They each bring their own particular specialty to the table, filling up the roster of classes with seven types of combat training, including boxing, Brazilian jujitsu, and judo. They round out the selection with conditioning courses designed to get participants into fighting shape, using TRX suspension harnesses to provide full-body, low-impact workouts.
