What You’ll Do

In the middle of the 20th century, the cognoscenti knew there was one place in New York to head for jazz: Bedford-Stuyvesant. The Brooklyn neighborhood was once the scene for the city’s best jazz clubs, which saw greats by the likes of Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Hank Mobley. Though those historic clubs are long closed, Debbie McClain has started to resurrect the neighborhood’s jazz bona fides. Inside her renowned 19th-century brownstone, you’ll brush elbows with world-class performers during an intimate salon-style evening of music, all under the direction of bassist Eric Lemon. At intermission, you’ll get a chance to tuck into some homemade fish fry before returning to your seat for an open mic that lasts until the wee hours of the night.

  • Hear Authentic Jazz Music in a Salon Setting
Gathering some of the city’s best musicians, hostess Debbie McClain values authenticity and talent, forbidding amps.

  • Meet the Musicians Themselves
Arrive an hour early for a Groupon-exclusive wine and cheese reception; you’ll get to mingle with the top crop of New York jazz performers, and hear stories of jazz and the community.

  • Dig Into Homemade Fish Fry
At the evening’s half-way point, enjoy some of Debbie’s favorite fish fry, prepared in-house.

When lifelong jazz enthusiast Debbie McClain inherited her grandparents’ Brooklyn brownstone, she decided to use the 19th century building as a portal to the not-so-distance past, when the neighborhood was a hot spot for jazz music. With help from jazz-string musician Eric Lemon, the musical director and developing partner, she began inviting such city legends as James Spaulding, Kiane Zawadi, and Keisha St. James for Friday night gatherings at the historic property.
