It’s Only A Play

The celebrity culture of Broadway is satirized in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only A Play, so the star-studded cast isn’t just a gimmick—it’s a punchline in and of itself. Matthew Broderick is Peter Austin, a playwright anxiously awaiting the very first reviews of his newest work. Two-time Tony-winner Katie Finneran plays Julia Budder, the wealthy but naive first-time producer footing the bill for the show and hosting the opening night party. And Nathan Lane plays Peter’s erstwhile best friend James Wicker, a stage actor who dodged the risk of starring in this untested drama by making the jump to television. Rounding out the cast is F. Murray Abraham as a bitter critic, Stockard Channing as the drug-addled leading lady, T.R. Knight as the wunderkind director, and Tony-nominated newcomer Micah Stock as an aspiring actor and current coat-checker. Together, they trade cutting quips about real celebrities—including a few of those on stage—and find unexpected warmth in their razor-sharp material.
