The Scouting Report
The perennially excellent Manchester Monarchs are in typical form in 2013–14, sitting atop the entire AHL with 69 points through 52 games. A pair of home contests in February and March pit the Monarchs against Eastern Conference opponents hailing from Worcester and Hartford. In seven games against the Sharks and three against the Wolf Pack, neither team has pulled out a regulation victory over Manchester this season. Much of the Monarchs’ success has hinged not on a well-oiled locker-room door, but on an offense fueled by the stellar play of center Jordan Weal, who has posted 11 goals and 33 assists in 52 games.<p>
A minor-league affiliate of the 2012 Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings, the Manchester Monarchs rule over the icy kingdom of Verizon Wireless Arena as they face off against top talent in the American Hockey League. Since the team was founded in 2001, the Monarchs have advanced to the playoffs in all but one season, twice advancing to the Eastern Conference finals. The Monarchs dominate their Eastern Conference competition at home, fueled by a fan base that consistently produces some of the league’s largest crowds, alongside their mascot Max, a lion who loves hockey as if it were a mouse kind enough to pull a thorn out of his paw.
