Miss Saigon
The year is 1975, just before the Fall of Saigon. The place is Dreamland, a sleazy nightclub. All eyes are on Kim, a 17-year-old orphan forced to take a job dancing for G.I.s stationed abroad during the Vietnam War. Fortunately, one of those pairs of eyes belongs to the upstanding sergeant Chris, and love blooms. But their young romance is threatened by circumstances beyond their control, as Chris is called back to America just as the Viet Cong take Kim’s city. Before he does, he leaves Kim with the hope that he will be back to rescue her—a hope that might prove crueler than no hope at all.
Based on Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly and written by the team behind Les Misérables, Miss Saigon’s soulful story and songs earned the musical multiple Tony nominations and led it to became one of the longest-running productions on Broadway. Emotion shines through in every number, from the soaring lament of “Why, God, Why?” to the chilling urgency of “The Fall of Saigon.” Combined with a set that spans the globe and a staged helicopter escape, Miss Saigon combines jaw-dropping spectacle with an emotional core that could draw tears from even the most theater-averse of rocks.
