The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity
Roaring laughs and gasps of wonder emanate from THEATREWORKS draws open the curtain on The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, a play that uses the world of professional wrestling as a metaphor for how much we cling to stereotypes. A 2010 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the script follows a Latino wrestler, Macedonia “Mace” Guerra, a man often cast as a villain in the sport’s mythology despite his intelligence and talent. At the urging of a promoter, he teams up with a fast-talking Indian athlete to form an anti-American duo. But as their stars rise, they are forced to decide how much humiliation they can endure in their new fictional roles. Packed with cultural commentary as well as white-knuckle wrestling scenes in an actual rink, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity entertains on both a visceral and a thought-provoking level.
