Most actors get dressed in a dressing room. The performers of Improv Asylum got dressed in a non-working elevator shaft. Then known as Rock Hard Improv, the comic trio lost their home when the ramshackle venue kicked them out in favor of hosting musical acts instead. The decision inspired them to take the plunge and open their own dedicated improv space.
Now 14 years into their noble experiment, the team hosts raucous, unscripted shows for their adoring fans. Main stage performances feature the Asylum's most seasoned funny people in 90-minute comedy bonanzas that thrive on games, scenes, and audiences who yell the first suggestion that pops into their mind. House team shows give students the chance to hone their chops, and the midnight special Raunch encourages performers to mine for the filthiest of comedy gold and the rottenest of banana peels.
Those interested in developing their own comedic instincts can avail themselves of the Asylum's eight-week classes. Spread over six levels, these sessions take neophytes from the basics of building improvised scenes to the construction of an original revue, performed for the public and the resident hermit who lives in the vents.
