Whenever I have guests from out of town, this is our go-to trip. It’s always a wonderful experience! The all day trip to Friday Harbor is the best!

This was such an incredible experience! We saw Minke, Orca, and Humpback whales! We also saw sea lions sunbathing on rocks. Whale watching has always been a dream of mine and this surpassed all of my expectations. We even brought our kids (ages 7, 5, and almost 1) who enjoyed every minute. Highly recommend this tour if in the Seattle area!

Very helpful and easy to book using Groupon. The experience was unbelievable. Knowledgeable, friendly and helpful captain and crew. Whales are promised and they mean it. Have taken this trip 3 times. Brought my grand kids (teenage) last time. They loved it

While we didn't see any whales, we did see sea lions and birds. But since they guarantee whales, they did give us a voucher to come back and try again. And the vouchers never expire, so since we were worn out after 8 hours of nothing, we can wait to use it until we're ready to try again, probably some time next year. Heads up, you do have to pay a $20 "groupon tax" when you check in. Either that wasn't in the fine print or I missed it. Also, get the Blueberry Buckle on the boat. It's really good. The crew was very nice, but the captain was a little short with us when we asked him a question, the one and only time we spoke with him.

About Puget Sound Express

For the Hanke family, it seems like Puget Sound Express has always been part of their lives. Raised in the Puget Sound his entire life, Pete Hanke honed his seafaring abilities alongside his father, Pete Sr. Together, the two started leading weeklong sailing adventures across the Pacific Northwest in 1981 and eventually started whale tours. Today, the business still remains a family affair, with grandparents, children, and grandchildren working side by side. Sherri Hanke, Pete’s wife, feels this is the company's biggest feature. "We have three generations of captains, so there is a wealth of knowledge there."

In addition to their family members, Puget Sound Express's crew is well acquainted with the area's menagerie of whales, which naturalists can identify based on their markings and slick leather jackets. Tours also pass into the habitats of other wildlife, often spotting humpbacks, sea birds, and bald eagles. The Hankes' most popular voyage tours the San Juan Islands, pausing at the fishing village of Friday Harbor. According to Sherri, this region is well known for its weather. "We refer to it as the Blue Hole, because it is like this circle of sunlight. It could be raining in Seattle and extremely sunny here."

The Hankes take adventure-seekers out on the M.V. Glacier Spirit, a modern, 70-seat vessel with open-air viewing decks and large windows allowing sightseers unencumbered views. Additionally, an on-board hydrophone listens in on whales' vocalizations to see which songs are currently stuck in their heads.
