I had a great experience for my first class! Communication beforehand was speedy and informative from Aunty Kawena when I had questions. Lots of knowledge and tradition to be shared - and everyone was so welcoming! Excited to continue!

About San Diego Hula Academy

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?

San Diego Hula Academy is a family-centric, loving environment focused on teaching Hawaiian history, story, language and song through dance. Our hula lineage is long-standing and steeped in tradition. We strive to bring knowledge and practices to our students by teaching the foundations of hula. We teach hula in both Kahiko (ancient) and Auana (modern) styles, as well as Tahitian.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?

As a long time dancer, San Diego Hula Academy’s owner/instructor Aunty Kawena Garuba had a desire to create a nurturing family environment for dancers of all ages. The students are her motivation. With an opportunity to properly teach hula and tradition to those who share the same love of Hawai’i, Aunty Kawena’s aspiration is finally being realized.

What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?

Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and visit our Website. Read our instructor bios, class descriptions, and upcoming events at the studio. We would love you to get to know the San Diego Hula Academy ‘ohana (family) and learn everything to expect before arriving to class!

What do you love most about your job?

We love seeing the dancers progress and transform over time. When we see our dancers enjoying and embodying the story they are performing, it brings immense joy to us as teachers. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced dancer, San Diego Hula Academy is the home to continue to practice the art of hula and Tahitian.
