The air at the SanCocho Festival crackles with energy as the sound of trumpets mixes with the beats of hand drums, dancers in bright costumes sweep and twirl before a crowd, and aromas from Latin dishes tantalize taste buds. Attendees might bob along to the beats of reggaeton, a style of music shaped in Puerto Rico, or swoon as mariachi bands serenade them with Mexican folklore favorites. They can move to the music as dancers gyrate their hips to salsa or merengue beats and watch a man and woman act out a courtship, complete with the symbolic presentation of a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos, during the Honduran punta dance.
When it's time for a break, festival-goers can head to the food plaza to sample eats from all over Latin America, including ropa vieja from Cuba, anticuchos from Peru, and pupusas from El Salvador.
