The Heavy Anchor
The Heavy Anchor is a self-proclaimed dive bar, but considering that it opened in 2011, that descriptor has more to do the establishment's philosophy than the layer of grime and grizzled bartenders that characterize most dives. Run by Jodie and Joshua Timbrook, who met while working at a St. Louis recording studio, it's all about live music, good drinks, and a friendly neighborhood feel.
Tunes: What lies behind the garage door painted with a giant octopus? The venue, of course. Separated from the bar, it hosts the area's indie-rock favorites, underground punk acts, and the occasional touring band.
Brews and Snacks: Of course, PBR and Miller High Life are on the menu, but the bar also boasts a selection of local beers on tap and in cans. Schlafly, 4 Hands, and Urban Chestnut are all represented. The Heavy Anchor doesn't have a full kitchen, but it does serve St. Louis favorites like Dogtown Pizza, Billy Goat Chips, and Gus' Pretzels.
Events: There's no shortage of things to do here. Shuffleboard, board games, darts, and Sega always await, and many nights are organized around live comedy, trivia, or double features that can lean snarky or serious. What else would you expect from a joint with twisted nautical murals, including a narwhal grinning in front of a flaming ship?
