The Issue: Lack of Support Networks for LGBT Youth
Suicide is the leading cause of death among gay and lesbian youth nationally, according to SPEAK (Suicide Prevention Education Awareness for Kids). This makes support networks crucial—and many LGBT youth lack a supportive environment, both at home and in school. The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Hillcrest Youth Center seeks to remedy that by offering LGBT youth a safe, affirming space that includes social activities as well as educational services such as HIV-prevention education, computer access, and discussion groups.
The Campaign: Providing Continued Support for LGBT Youth and Adults
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by The San Diego LGBT Community Center to provide continued support to the LGBT community through its 40 programs and services. Along with youth-specific programs and educational services, The Center provides HIV testing and counseling, discussion groups, and other health services.
