The Issue: King County Families Experiencing Homelessness

More than 8,000 people are homeless on any given night in King County, including more than 3,100 people who are members of families with children, according to data from the King County government. Without a stable source of food or housing, it is difficult for these individuals to focus on improving their situation.

The Campaign: Providing Food for Homeless Families

If 50 people donate $10 or $25 to this Grassroots campaign, then Way Back Inn can fund nutritious breakfasts for 50 children or families of four for one week. Children or families receive gift cards to purchase breakfast foods or other groceries at a local grocery store. Each additional $10 raised will provide another week of breakfasts for a child; each additional $25 raised will provide breakfast for a family of four for another week.

By providing a combination of a safe living environment and healthful foods to start the day, Way Back Inn allows families in its housing units an opportunity to spend their time and effort creating a permanent change in their living situations. People who donate $25 or more and register their donation can be recognized on the Way Back Inn website and will receive a personal letter of thanks from the board of directors.

The Fine Print

About Way Back Inn

Way Back Inn began as coins dropped in a swear jar on the floor of a Boeing fabrication shop. Over time, the funds in the makeshift piggy bank grew, and volunteers began working with the owners of abandoned homes and leasing properties for families experiencing homelessness with the money they raised. Now with 10 units in Renton, Tukwila, and Kent, Way Back Inn provides short- and long-term housing for families to help them achieve self-sufficiency. While living in the housing, families can take part in Way Back Inn's programs to attain employment, apply for permanent housing, or finish a trade program. In 2013, Way Back Inn aims to provide rental and utility assistance and short- and long-term housing for 75 families.
