Though Sue Harragan and Tawnya Christian discovered barre workouts on opposite coasts, a mutual love of fitness and their desire to help others achieve their "best self" brought them together in Las Vegas. They became business partners and founded their first fitness studio, where they strengthened hearts, cores, and limbs with ballet-inspired barre workouts. And that was just the beginning. Since then, Sue and Tawnya have trained new instructors who have gone on to found studios throughout the country, creating a national fitness empire the duo dubbed thebodybar(re).
At each location, upbeat music fuels the signature class, during which students line up at the ballet barre and perform a toning routine. These routines are based on dance-training moves blended with elements of yoga, Pilates, and orthopedic stretching, though no experience in dance is required to succeed. They combine fat-burning bouts of interval training with flexibility-boosting and muscle-toning moves, giving students the lithe, slim limbs of a ballerina or Gumby. And some classes offer variations on the signature workout, too, incorporating resistance equipment or slow, calculated movements to emphasize form.
