  • Red Frog Events
In addition to the sense of perseverance and accomplishment that comes with finishing a 5K, the organizers of the Bacon Chase have added another incentive: bacon. During their two races?the 5K Piggy Pilgrimage, which is a traditional 5K, and the 0.05K Blitz to Bacon, which is a 164-foot sprint?runners can munch on unlimited bacon bits before feasting on unlimited amounts of bacon at the finish line. Runners 21 and older can wash down the savory strips of bacon with a bloody mary, and all runners get a Bacon Chase T-shirt and a signature bacon-scented bib. The festival opens at 8 a.m. and features many bacon-themed activities, plus music. The festive day serves a greater purpose, too. Attendees will be able to register to become a St. Jude Hero, raise money for St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, or both.

  • Challenge Nation
Challenge Nation pioneered the urban-adventure race with a race season that includes visits to more than 35 cities across the country. Each scavenger hunt is personalized to the hosting city, exploring its many diverse neighborhoods with a series of clues that would test even the most skilled children's-book detective. The teams?composed of at least two people?vie for a $300 first-place prize. The Amazing Race?style competition rewards quick wits and wise planning over physical fitness, so the best way to prepare is by doing logic puzzles while eating Funyuns and lounging in a La-Z-Boy. The top 25 teams qualify, the top five receiving free entry, to compete in the national championship, which rewards winning teams with a $5,000 cash prize.

  • Wild Arts Festival
Audubon Society of Portland's mission was solidified in 1902, when a few like-minded conservationists came together to found the organization. In their own words, this group set out "to use any and all lawful means for the protection of the wild birds and animals for the State of Oregon and elsewhere." Their first success came quickly, when the Society helped pass the Model Bird Law in 1903, which protected native birds from being shot and sold. Since then, the Society has advocated for countless creatures, from northern spotted owls to wild salmon, the latter of which kind of look like birds if you squint really hard. Today, the Society stands more than 14,000 strong. The support of these members helps maintain nature sanctuaries with hiking trails, fund educational initiatives, and run a care center. The care center is an especially vital resources, as it rehabilitates approximately 3,000 animals every year and responds to thousands of wildlife-related injuries.

  • The Bite Of Oregon
For 32 years, The Bite of Oregon has rolled out its tents, tables, and stages every summer for a multiday celebration of the state’s food, culture, and residents. Attendees raise their forks to the idea that “Life Tastes Better Here,” a mantra the festival lives up to by offering a culinary bounty crafted by some of Oregon’s most talented chefs. From small plates to full meals, vendors distribute their creations and, in between bites, regional wines and craft beers splash both new and familiar flavors across palates. As visitors wine and dine, local and national bands provide the soundtrack from multiple stages. Demonstrating its respect for the community, The Bite of Oregon strives to be a Zero Waste event, each year producing less waste by lining its grounds with recycling stations and hiring unemployed goats to eat everyone’s napkins.
