  • Tomato Blast at Soldier Field
In case of a zombie apocalypse, a few simple principles could be a survivor's salvation: Be prepared, be paranoid, and above all, run. Participants in the Infected Zombie 5K Trail Run get a chance to practice, and can play either living or dead as they navigate a woodland arena infested with walking, crawling, running, and climbing zombies. Some courses may challenge runners with additional obstacles, such as climbing walls, tire fields, and haystacks. Meanwhile, the zombies attempt to satisfy their hunger for fast food by surprising the runners and snatching flags off of their waists. Whether they've been caught, the living make up with the dead at the after-party, which features unlimited beer, award ceremonies, and live music.

  • Candy Crush Crawl
The fun-loving founders of the Candy Crush Crawl are determined to correct a glaring oversight at most bar crawls: no candy. To remedy this, they gather revelers for a sweet-stuffed jaunt down Clark Street in Wrigleyville designed to celebrate local watering holes and loads of candies—10,000 pounds to be specific. The Valentine's crawl, themed "Find Your Crush", makes stops at various neighborhood institutions, including Old Crow Smokehouse, John Barleycorn, Deuce's and the Diamond Club, and Rockwood Place throughout the day. Drink specials, gooey chocolate fountains, and jelly-bean-filled swimming pools, that attendees are encouraged to jump into, await guests at each bar. Nylon fanny packs provided with each ticket help participants stow extra sweets such as chocolate bars, lemon heads, and gummy bears at this candy free-for-all. Guests are encouraged to wear outlandish costumes, as prizes will be distributed at the end of the night.

  • Las Vegas Car Museum
Dance Pizazz owner Nikki McElvain believes that dancing is not just a fun way to spend an evening, but a way to celebrate life. Boasting more than a decade of experience gracefully swirling across dance floors, she now shares her fancy footwork with patrons of all skill levels at her own studio. She invites teens, adults, and seniors to explore the dance styles of ballroom, Latin, and swing on the studio's floating dance floor, whose low-impact surface relieves feet and joints. Singles and couples hone their technique in group or private lessons, and newly-weds-to-be can prepare for their first dance in wedding-oriented programs. To simulate a real-world dance setting, Nikki turns on the studio’s LED nightclub lights and releases Richard Simmons for evening social dances, where students can gather to show off their newly learned moves.

  • Red Frog Events
In addition to the sense of perseverance and accomplishment that comes with finishing a 5K, the organizers of the Bacon Chase have added another incentive: bacon. During their two races, the 5K Piggy Pilgrimage, which is a traditional 5K, and the 0.05K Blitz to Bacon, which is a 164-foot sprint, runners can munch on unlimited bacon bits before feasting on unlimited amounts of bacon at the finish line. Runners 21 and older can wash down the savory strips of bacon with a bloody mary, and all runners get a Bacon Chase T-shirt and a signature bacon-scented bib. The festival opens at 8 a.m. and features many bacon-themed activities, plus music. The festive day serves a greater purpose, too. Attendees will be able to register to become a St. Jude Hero, raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or both.

  • Selfless
The founders of SELFLESS started with an idea that was, well, selfless: make charitable giving automatic, so it becomes a seamless part of day-to-day life. Members pay a small monthly fee, 80% of which is donated to a charity of their choice. In return, they gain a SELFLESS card, and with it, access to a long list of perks: discounts at restaurants such as Stella Barra Pizzeria, Sunda, Kanela, and Chicago Q, ride credits for Lyft and Divvy, and even a free one-week pass to Equinox gyms. SELFLESS also hosts exclusive events and makes it easy for members to donate to additional causes on its website.

  • American Chamber Opera Company
Founded in 2011, the Chicago-based American Chamber Opera features an ensemble committed to singing full-length oratorios in English. Its productions resemble concerts more than traditional opera performances: the music takes center stage as the singers belt and emote in settings that evoke the world of the story with just a few well-placed details.
