Within Abba! Bellydance's downtown Water Street studio, experienced belly dancer Blyth—a.k.a. Valkyrie Myst—schools hip-movers in the methods and techniques of traditional Middle Eastern dance. Under Myst's watchful eye, barefooted body-shakers begin to master their musculature, gradually gaining the ability to isolate their hips from their legs, their head from their shoulders, and their green M&Ms from the rest of the worthless bunch. The undulating, snake-like movements of this ancient art form can cultivate a sense of sensuality and femininity in the dancer, and can provide an intense and enjoyable cardio workout. Abba! Bellydance's courses aim to capture that consciousness, while at the same time introducing dancers to the foundations in isolations, veil movements, and zill patterns.

When Barron Jackson craves beauty, he doesn't always seek out a colorful sunset or a dramatic thunderstorm. For him, one of the most stunning sights to behold is a lifestyle that's changed for the better. As a certified personal trainer, Barron knows lots of people who embody this type of beauty. Many are his clients, who he coaches in boot camps at X-Train: A Fitness Community. During his indoor and outdoor camps, exercisers of all levels chase their fitness goals through intense workouts that pair motivation with cardio challenges and functional strength training. In addition to sculpting muscles with kettlebells and TRX suspension straps, participants forge friendships as they cheer one another on toward personal bests. A certified trainer supervises each session, stressing proper technique as the group performs core-toning bodyweight exercises such as push-ups and calorie-torching plyometrics such as jumping jacks. To help clients achieve a healthy BMI, Barron's team also provides free measurements, weigh-ins, and body-fat assessments along with nutrition classes.
The instructors at Yoga Studio of Corpus Christi help students focus their minds and calibrate them to their bodies. Thoughtful breathing exercises and strength-building poses are consistently the vehicles toward mental and physical balance, although the studio offers diverse challenges across 14 different class types ranging from 65 to 90 minutes each. Those just starting out can learn the ropes in a beginners session, whereas yogis looking for more intense workouts can attend Hatha flow classes, which build core strength and improve stamina through continuous movement and by teaching pupils how to apply papier mâché to their midsections. During hot-yoga classes, the instructors crank up the thermostat to 97.8 degrees, helping to loosen stiff muscles and joints, encourage detoxification, and increase flexibility during Vinyasa flow movements.
As the company's mantra states, the staff of Physicians Medi-Spa aim to help clients reverse the various processes that wreak havoc on the skin and body. Under supervision from the doctors that own the spa, aesthetic technicians use an arsenal of elōs lasers and radio-frequency technology to unburden skin of signs of age, unwanted tattoos, and excess hair. Customers can avoid the invasive nature and downtime of plastic surgery with CoolSculpting treatments that target fat deposits, or Ultherapy ultrasound sessions that tighten facial skin loosened from years of playing checkers against high-powered fans.
For Adam Farrell, college wasn’t a time of personal enrichment, but of unhealthy living. Once the young undergraduate student became dissatisfied with the party lifestyle he was leading in college, he began exercising regularly. He found that, unlike the quickly dissipating pleasures of pizza dinners and games of donut-glaze pong, exercise helped him cultivate the overall happiness and confidence he sought. He soon realized that he had both a passion and knack for personal training.
Ten years later, Farrell is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, a well-established personal trainer, and the owner of his own fitness facility. Aided by a staff of fellow fitness aficionados, he conducts boot-camp programs and athletic-performance-enhancement camps, leading high-intensity, circuit-style workouts that aim to slim physiques, tone muscles, and boost metabolisms. The trainers scale these workouts to accommodate clients of all athletic abilities and accommodate restrictive issues, including injuries and deep-seated fears of working out in mismatched gym socks.
