  • Hops and Grain
Four Things to Know About Hops and Grain You shouldn’t judge a beer by its can, but at Hops and Grain, the mere existence of the can is a starting point. This sustainable, award-winning brewery remains faithful to the aluminum can because of its recyclability, but that’s just a small example of how eco-mindedness and craft brewing converge there. Read on for a closer look: They took gold at the World Cup of Beer. In 2012, Hops and Grain’s Alt-eration won the gold medal in the category of Best German-Style Brown Ales. Alt-eration is brewed with a German pilsner-malt base and dashes of malt from Vienna and Munich. Their beers have craft sensibilities and conscious intentions. Whether brewing traditional ales or creative departures such as the Zoe—which is reminiscent of a German lager but dry-hopped for a crisp detour—the brewery remains consistent with its mission by donating 1% of their annual revenue to local growers and producers. They’ve carved out a space for experimental beers. Their Greenhouse is a laboratory of sorts—a 3 bbl pilot system that, when combined with the brewers’ creative whims, produces unconventional and experimental beers that are available (sometimes exclusively) in the taproom. They have Brew (biscuits) for your dog. You can’t have a beer with man’s best friend, but Hops and Grain’s Brew Biscuits are a way to bond with your pup without feeding it booze. Brewers recycle the residual malted grains—after the wort and sugary liquids have been extracted—into these dog treats, which are rich in fiber and protein.

  • 512 Brewing Company
Five Things to Know About (512) Brewing Company (512) Brewing Company builds its beers upon old-world English and Belgian styles, enhancing those familiar flavors with local, domestic, and organic ingredients and Austin’s mineral-rich water. Here are some more tips about this locally owned brewery: Kevin Brand is in charge. As owner and head brewer, Kevin has been passionate about beer since the early 90s, when he worked at a local beer store in the Hyde Park area. In 2007, he finally decided to make brewing his career. The Pecan Porter (6.8% ABV) is a must. It’s one of the brewery’s most-popular concoctions, and it’s available year-round. Nearly black in color, this full-bodied beer features Baird’s chocolate and organic Texas pecans. Many of the beers are seasonal. The White IPA, for instance, is only available between March and August, and the Imperial Stout is limited to winter months. Be sure to check (512)’s brew calendar to see what’s on tap. Weekly tours take you behind the scenes. Typically, these tours take place on Saturdays, with one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Make sure you reserve a spot beforehand, though—these tours are pretty intimate and space is limited. Be sure to grab a growler. You can purchase these empty vessels, which hold about four pints of beer, at the brewery and have them filled up at locations all across Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. • Circle Brewing Company
Four Things to Know About Circle Brewing Company Although it just opened in 2010, Circle Brewing Company has already accomplished feats befitting a veteran brewery. Not only did it take home the 2014 World Beer Cup silver award for its Alibi Blonde, but its popularity has earned it a spot on Urban Dictionary. So what’s the secret to this craft brewery’s success? Read on to find out: The brewery combines two great things: best friends and beer. Circle was founded by childhood friends Ben Sabel and Judson Mulherin, who grew up brewing beer in their hometown of Nashville. The beers are super old school. All of Circle’s beers embrace Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516, which means they're each made from just four ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast. Circle keeps it simple. Thanks to that purity law, brews are free of chemicals, additives, and adjuncts, such as rice and cheap sugars, which lower quality and flavor alike. They've got Texas pride. Even though they're Tennessee transplants, Sabel and Mulherin rep the Lone Star State like native Texans. That translates to deep involvement in the Texas beer scene, including event hosting duties during Austin Beer Week and feature appearances at the Texas Craft Brewers Festival.

  • Thirsty Planet
Four Things to Know about Thirsty Planet Brewing Company The team at Thirsty Planet Brewing Company brews with a purpose—and that isn’t just the desire to drink tasty craft beer. The brewery is also committed to improving the world, whether that’s through eco-friendly practices or charitable donations. Read on to learn to learn how else Thirsty Planet is good for Austin and for beer. Beer that benefits others. Sales of the brewery’s winter seasonal, Silverback pale ale, support the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. Thirsty Planet has made donations to other organizations, too, including Lizzy’s Hospice House, the Austin Zoo, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. If you can’t make it out to the brewery, you can still tour it. Although the in-person tour is worth it, Texas Hill Country is quite a trek. That’s why Thirsty Planet offers a virtual tour of its site. Thirsty Planet’s founder really knows his beer. Brian Smittle discovered his love of beer while studying abroad in England. Upon graduation, he volunteered at a brewery in Vail, Colorado, then opened a brewpub in Oklahoma in 1993. Finally, he opened Thirsty Planet outside of Austin in 2010. Souvenirs for sipping. The brewery not only pours Yellow Armadillo, Buckethead, and Thirsty Goat on draft, it also offers pint glasses featuring their respective logos.
