The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don?t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews.
Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan?s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. After-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.
Though Science Central, a non-profit organization, first opened its doors in 1995, the facility touts a history that dates back to its opening in 1929 as the city?s light and power plant. Now the building illuminates minds instead of bulbs, with 32,000 square feet of exhibit space, a rotating schedule of traveling exhibitions, three classrooms, and a demonstration theater. Budding minds venture through horizon-broadening exhibits that cover diverse scientific areas such as the human body and meteorology.
Understanding that each child learns differently, the staff members of Sylvan Learning?s numerous study centers design custom lesson programs. Based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews, the staff works with students to help them firmly grasp basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and how to remember facts without tattooing them to their chests. Programs target students in kindergarten through grade 12 and mold to various learning styles, helping kids feel more comfortable in the classroom. Afterschool or summer classes can ready high-school students for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students wow college-admissions officers with their superior writing skills, exemplary test scores, and willingness to arm-wrestle the school mascot.
Cognitive development and creativity go hand in hand at Emerald Learning Academy. Its classes for kids range from arts and crafts, a small-group program that welcomes kids as young as 5 to express themselves via artistic mediums, to Spanish, which begins developing bilingual abilities at age 3. Their chess course cultivates healthy competition among second graders and older kids, and the forthcoming speech-language pathology program welcomes kids at 1 year old.
At Brain Balance Center, "we subscribe to the theory that the brain can be changed." Because of this, the learning center eschews pharmaceuticals for physical and cognitive exercises and dietary changes when dealing with learning difficulties caused by ADHD, dyslexia, and autism. The staff, many of whom hold masters degrees in areas such as Special Education and Sports Physiology, work one-on-one with each child to assess their issues, helping them improve sensory and motor skills, visual-spatial skills, and social interactions.
