  • Jeffersonville Italian Festival
In polite company, one should never slurp spaghetti or eat dinner with sauce all over their chin. But such propriety flies out the window during the spaghetti-eating contest at the Jeffersonville Italian Festival, when participants vie to scarf down heaps of pasta the fastest. The festival's cake- and cannoli-eating contests likewise require speedy mastication, but languorous visitors can take their time savoring the Italian cuisine served by local vendors, enjoying it alfresco among friends and neighbors. In between bites of chicken parmesan or tiramisu, attendees can also show off their artistic sides with crafts or two-step to Italian tunes crooned by live musicians.

  • Old West Festival
It's easy to get to the Old West Festival—first head about 15 minutes east of Cincinnati, then turn about 150 years back in time. Modeled after the infamous Dodge City, Kansas, the permanent establishment opens its doors every summer to display rootin', tootin', and even a bit of trick-shootin' by professional performers. Take a look at just a few of the sights to keep your steely eyes open for: Cowboy Chow: At the Long Branch Saloon, cowpokes and lil' doggies can saddle up to the bar for a big bowl of rattlesnake chili, buffalo burgers, Texas-style roast beef, and loaded waffle fries. Wash it all down with soda, beer, and sarsaparilla. Wild Times in the West: All day long, the Arena hoots and hollers with the Rider Kiesner Roping, Whipping, and Spinning Show, and throughout the park, conveniently scheduled gunfights thrill young and old. Be aware, though—carrying firearms is strictly prohibited unless you're part of the show or can prove you're related to Billy the Kid. Singing Songs and Spinning Yarns: At the Mockingbird, storytellers tell Fantastic Tales of The West all day long, and at Chisholm Trail, musicians host family sing-alongs and banjo-and-fiddle concerts. Fun and Games: families can enjoy activities such as a covered wagon ride, pony ride, train ride, slingshot-shooting range, gold-panning sluice, magic show, or lasso practice. Theme Weeks: Check out the special themed weekends to experience the West you'd want to live in, whether that's a Steampunk outpost, a baseball-crazy town that plays according to 1878 rules, or a haunted ghost town held over Halloween weekend.

  • The Waterfront Challenge
The starting pistol fires and the runners are off, but they're in for a surprise. Rather than running an easy 5K around gentle bends and smooth pavement, they have to clamber over parked cars, carry hefty tires, and participate in burlap sack races before they even get near the finish line. This is the Waterfront Challenge, an urban race designed to test a runner's mettle, strength, and endurance on a route that runs through Louisville's scenic, 85-acre Waterfront Park along the Ohio River. The excitement extends beyond the unorthodox obstacles with waves that run late into the night—those who take off at 9 p.m. make up the Glow Race, which elevates the fun by illuminating runners with glow sticks, glow-in-the dark costumes, and the runners' own sweat, which is naturally bioluminescent. At the end of the race, runners celebrate their victories on Big Four Lawn where music, cold beer, and food join an awards ceremony for top finishers and best glow-in-the-dark costume.
