Read on to learn more about the thrilling events that bring visitors back every year: The special guests are the biggest draw. In the past, the convention has played host to everyone from 10th Doctor David Tennant to Star Trek’s William Shatner. You may see Batman walking around the convention floor. Cosplaying is king at conventions, and Wizard World gets as many Jokers, Chewbaccas, and Transformers as it can handle. Be ready to fill up nerd-approved merchandise at the countless vendor booths. That includes everything from hard-to-find vintage memorabilia to new merchandise inspired by characters from Star Wars, The Avengers, The Simpsons, and more. You can see live art in action. • Lakeside Legacy Foundation
Back in the 1860s, grain magnate Charles S. Dole purchased a 1,000-acre expanse of land overlooking the sparkling waters of Crystal Lake. There, he built a classically designed three-story mansion with lavish touches including Italian marble, black walnut orchards, and lush gardens, where the Ringling Bros circus housed the circus animals off season. At the time, the tract of land was known as Lakeland Farm, and over the next century it passed hands from the Doles to an elite country club to the Franciscan Order to the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake. Today, the mansion is in the hands of the Lakeside Legacy Foundation. The staff maintains the grounds and ensures the home remains a valuable resource for the residents of Crystal Lake with ventures such as hosting workspace for local artists and musicians. The Dole Mansion offers, 2 award winning galleries, tours, culinary programs, dance programs, and a 100 seat performance venue called 'the Listening Room. The grounds also host special events including art fairs, Christmas celebrations, and McHenry County's "Granddaddy of All Festivals," the Lakeside Fest, which has been bringing live music, local eats, and traveling artists to the shores of the lake for more than 36 years.

  • DuPage County Fair
The DuPage County Fair takes place July 22-26. Tens of thousands of people flock to the DuPage County Fair each summer—in fact, the event drew over 100,000 attendees in 2014 alone. That popularity isn't due to a single event or attraction, but rather to the sum of a multi-day festival showcasing agriculture and celebrating summertime fun as a whole. The Axe Women Loggers of Maine will be competing all five days in Lumberjack shows, and the Willis Clan will be performing on Thursday evening. There will be roving acts, 4-H exhibits, variety of musical entertainment, animal shows, and pig races all included with admission. Saturday the International Pro Rodeo Association will host two sanctioned events. Walking the long line of vendors takes attendees past familiar fair foods, and a craft beer tent with over 40 craft beers. On Sunday there are two demolition derbies. These are just some of the events that make the DuPage County Fair a great destination for families.

  • Andersonville Midsommarfest
A glass of cold beer in one hand, a plate of food balanced in the other. The only reason to disrupt such a perfect combination might be to dance to the live band performing just a few feet away. That's the basic Midsommarfest formula, and every summer, nearly 50,000 people flock to Andersonville for this celebration of all things local. Going strong for the past half century, the fest takes over Clark Street from Foster to Catalpa with booths for food and crafts as well as five different stages. These showcase eclectic entertainments that truly reflect the neighborhood's charm: not just cover bands (though there are those, too), but a pet parade, Swedish music, dance troupes, and sets from blues, roots, and funk bands. All the fun also helps the neighborhood, and not just because stoplights are powered by laughter; proceeds go to benefit community causes.
