  • Nothing Bundt Cakes of Sherman Oaks
In 1997, friends Dena Tripp and Debra Shwetz set out to create a luscious, melt-in-your-mouth bundt cake. What began as an endeavor in their own home kitchens soon blossomed into a bustling business with bakeries in 13 states. Rich cocoa browns and soft pastels lend a nostalgic feel to each bakery, where every day lava-powered ovens warm up batter made from fresh eggs, real butter, and cream cheese. Flavors such as chocolate chocolate chip, pecan praline, and white-chocolate raspberry remain constants on the menu, and a new flavor makes a guest appearance each month. Cakes come in several sizes, from the standard 8- or 10-inch bundt to the single-serving bundtlet and the bite-size bundtini, all frosted with a signature blend of cream cheese and butter. Each Nothing Bundt Cakes location also houses its own stock of gifts. Patrons may come across the brightly hued handle of a confetti cake knife or opt to take home an old-fashioned tin, perfect for stowing coffee and imprisoning gingerbread men who have tried to run away. Contact the location of your choice for gift pricing and availability.

  • Get Shaved
facet: Main type: Traditional locale: en_US title: Get Shaved facet_type_id: b380c510-5f3c-1032-bcf8-fe984efdfaf4 html_text: |- Though they spent their childhoods on opposite coasts, husband and wife Pat and Kristin Roskowick both grew up loving frozen treats. Pat discovered his affinity for shave ice at the many raspados carts that kept the San Fernando Valley cool during the summertime, and Kristin begged her mother to traipse through three feet of snow during the harsh winters of Massachusetts to fetch her her beloved ice cream. Years later, those sweet-toothed kids were delighted when they found a dessert that combined both their favorite treats. A blend of fine shave ice, ice cream, and sweetened condensed milk, Hawaiian-style shave ice quickly became the Roskowick's new favorite dessert, and in 2008, the couple opened their own shop. At Get Shaved, customers can select from a range of ice creams, flavored syrups, and toppings such as marshmallows and caramel to create their own shave ice treat. Monkey Brains––a blend of strawberry and banana shave ice and sweetened condensed milk––ranks as a “tried & true combo.” The staff also doles out scoops of ice cream in flavors such as macadamia nut and kona coffee to concoct ice cream cookie sandwiches and shakes. In addition to their storefronts, the Get Shaved traveling truck churns out icy desserts at different spots throughout the city based on a schedule that is updated online throughout the day.

  • Eilat Grill
In addition to its azure waters and its intoxicating climate, the Mediterranean is known for the rich variety of herbs and spices that populate the cuisines of its people. Steeped in this tradition themselves, the cooks at Eilat Grill season their meat, seafood, and vegetarian dishes with the same flavors found in bustling markets and cozy kitchens throughout the region. Their menu is packed with traditional favorites such as hummus plates, kabobs, and grill plates piled high with chicken, beef, and lamb, as well as four salmon entrees prepared with different international twists. Diners can also sample exotic breakfasts such as shakshuka, a poached egg dish soaked in a homemade spicy tomato sauce, or stick with familiar favorites such as classic American burgers. No matter what they order, guests take their meals in a romantic dining room featuring accents such as Jerusalem stone columns, tiled arches, and statues of Cupid updating his LiveJournal. This scene is occasionally joined by visions of colorful cakes and tarts, which make their home in the displays of the restaurant’s bakery.
