All year long, Ohio ATV World hands over the keys to a stable of well-maintained Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Polaris all-terrain vehicles that purr beneath riders as they wind down through 16 miles of trails in Hocking Hills Nature Trails. In rain, sleet, snow, or sun, attentive staff members provide helmets before indoctrinating off-road skills into beginners and experts, who can zip through trail barrels and ramps atop their four-wheelers. Off the beaten path, Ohio ATV World arranges group outings and birthday-party activities, such as scavenger hunts set amid the park’s scenic foliage and natural wildlife.
Purpose Yoga’s instructors know how difficult it can be to find time during a busy day for yoga’s quiet and concentration. During lunchtime three days a week, they host a 45-minute session where visitors can recharge their batteries and enjoy lunch options such as veggie or tuna wraps. At their other weekly sessions, the teaching team leads up to 60 students of all levels through power, Hatha, and hot yoga. Classes range from slow-paced beginner Hatha sessions to sunrise yoga and one-hour full-body workouts with the studio’s temperature cranked between 90 and 95 degrees.
When they aren’t deepening their visitors’ meditative states, the instructors prep the next generation of yoga gurus during a nine-month teacher-training program that explores 71 yoga poses, the Sanskrit language, anatomy, and more. After sessions, co-owner and licensed massage therapist Jessica Hardisky further relaxes muscles with massage styles such as Thai yoga, prenatal, and hot stone.
After finding great joy as an art teacher for more than a decade, Laura Carter and her husband Andy, decided to take their love of art outside the traditional classroom and establish Raise Your Brush. A short time later, the art studio, which unites painting lessons with social drinking, began to garnish high praise for it’s casual atmosphere. Such praise came from both customers as well as local media outlets including Living Dayton.
During each painting class—Laura’s most popular offering—students are first encouraged to loosen up with a glass of wine or beer from the studio’s newly remodeled bar. Students then cozy up to tables to make the most of the included supplies, ranging from aprons to acrylic paints to blank, potential-packed canvasses. In the ensuing hours, amateur artists recreate the evening’s theme-specific image with the help of Laura’s artistic eye and articulate tongue. Though the themes constantly change, past images have included cityscapes, a fleur de lis, and moonrises. Regardless of the night’s theme, all students are free to take their homework straight home to display on any already vibrant mantle or surprisingly lonely family room wall.
Practice Yoga on Fifth focuses on Ashtanga (breath synchronized with fixed postures) and Vinyasa (linking movement with breath) yoga styles, emphasizing the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of the practice. The staff of talented instructors teaches a varied set of classes appropriate for both beginners and yogis more bendable than taffy warmed in a British child’s pocket. A drop-in beginner's class (currently offered Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.) takes a slow, gentle pace to acquaint brand newbies with postures, and open-level Vinyasa teaches accessible endurance-building, flexibility-enhancing sequences in a room heated to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. More-advanced classes include Hot Vinyasa—a sweaty, stretchy 90 minutes of challenging poses in 95-degree heat—and the Ashtanga primary series, a fast-paced sequence of 72 postures with synchronized breath.
