The Scouting Report

Even as the season-opening series, every game between the Volcanoes and the Vancouver Canadians has the sizzle of a championship contest. Since 2006, the Volcanoes and the Canadians have been veritable trophy hogs, each winning three Northwest League titles—though Vancouver has accomplished that feat more recently, winning their third-straight title in 2013. The Volcanoes enter 2014 with their sights set on another championship run, and they have good reason to be confident: last year’s team posted the best combined regular-season record in the Northwest League, winning the South division in both the first and second half. On Friday night, fans can revel in the pomp of opening night as post-game fireworks blossom in the night sky and illuminate the tent town where the bat boys secretly dwell after dark.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes

In their 17-year history as the short-season Class-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, the Volcanoes have been a venerable understudy to their Major League parent club, winning their division title eight times to go along with five Northwest League Championships. The Volcanoes’ past rosters have seen some of the Giants’ top young stars slug and pitch their way to the big leagues and finally take the training wheels off of their gloves. Crowds of up to 5,000 voracious fans flow into Volcanoes Stadium, where the Lava Lodge Sports Bar, the Volcanotron video board, and a kids’ playground join forces to offer a stacked lineup of off-the-field attractions.
