In a Nutshell

Comics from The Second City & beyond court laughs in new theater, pouring improv, sketch & standup into brimming calendar

The Fine Print

Laughter is the spark of the soul, which is why comedians can light up rooms during a blackout but cannot be left unattended at gas stations. Enjoy crackling wit with today's GrouponLive deal: for $35, you get two general-admission tickets to a standup, sketch, or improv show at UP Comedy Club at Piper's Alley (up to a $70 value). The club will waive ticket transaction fees for Groupon holders. Groupons must be redeemed online before the show; no walk-ins will be accepted. Tickets will be emailed after redemption. Shows begin on December 21, 2011.

In December, The Second City—Chicago's go-to haven for improv—will open a sister theater, UP Comedy Club, whose packed calendar lists original performances by Second City comics, standup from visiting comedians, and fast-paced improv revues. In the theater’s inaugural month, visitors can indulge in giggles at the holiday season's expense during The Second City's Dysfunctional Holiday Revue, a full-length show lampooning Yuletide staples, from holiday gift exchanges to pulling clumps of white hair out of the chimney. In The Second City's History of Chicago, the troupe culls the best moments from decades of performances to create a hilarious seminar on Windy City lore. The selection of shows rotates with changing seasons and visiting performers. Every show is rated for appropriate audiences, letting parents know when to bring the kids to fine-tune their funny bones, and when to bring pet parrots to update their repertoire.

While comics deliver deadpan standup or rapid-fire improv, audiences sit in cabaret-style seating, in which strangers share tables during the performance and chorus-line spots at intermission. The newly designed 300-seat theater butters up tough crowds with a well-stocked bar and classic Chicago eateries such as Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, Vienna Beef, and Eli's Cheesecake (food and drink not included).

Ticket prices vary among scheduled shows and may fluctuate throughout the week, so buyers should plan ahead for the best value.

The Groupon Guide to: International Sports Competition Opening Ceremony

Every four years athletes from around the world gather to compete in whatever country has the most corporate sponsors and enough resources to recycle all of the bottles of power juice that athletes drink. Regardless of where it takes place, here’s what you can expect to see during the event's opening ceremony:

• Elderly athlete lighting a tree on fire to signify that plants can never be athletes

• Child representatives from every country marching into the arena to the sound of their country's official brass instrument

• Coloured lights that spell out "LOSING IS BAD FOR COUNTRIES"

• The athletes enter, wearing only body paint in their country's colours. After they start to sweat, any athlete whose body paint does not melt together into a greenish brown is awarded five bonus points for his or her country.

• The Happy Waving Man (official International Sports Competition mascot) comes out wearing overalls and leads everyone in chanting the official International Sports Competition slogan: "This competition is for us. This is our day. No time for water breaks, only for play."

Can some plants play sports?
