To create a fruitful learning environment, the instructors at Art Classes For You interact one-on-one with their pencil-wielding protégés, moving at the pace most comfortable for each individual student. Every week, small groups of adults and children gather to work on an array of art concepts, such as positive and negative space, contour line drawing, shading, and tonal values. Most importantly, instructors encourage students to look at their own work from a critical perspective, understanding their personal tendencies and recognizing bad habits, such as drawing on classmates’ backs instead of pieces of paper. Group lessons are limited to 10 students, and private lessons are available.
No man is an island, but you can still develop muscles that are hard as rock. The personal trainers at One2One Training Center have helped everyone from professional athletes to body builders get into the best shape of their lives. Anyone who goes through One2One's fitness program—natural athlete or otherwise—must be willing to admit the following: "I can't do it all by myself." With a dedicated staff of trainers so close at hand, that's not such a bad thing. Trainers work with individual clients to develop realistic fitness goals, then follow through with the help of advanced exercise equipment at one of three local facilities.
At Paint Until You Faint, students are introduced to the diverse world of art creation with recreation firmly in mind. Artists bring a favorite beverage to class, and sip on it continually while a 1950s-style jukebox plays tunes in the background and a professional instructor guides them through recreating a painting step by step. Students of all skill levels are welcome to join for the camaraderie while forging their own image on the canvas.
When hairstylist Shelton Ogle opened his first salon at 21, he quickly realized the secret to maximizing the number of gorgeous haircuts he could render: a well-trained staff. So two years later, he opened his beauty school, Ogle School of Hair, Skin & Nails. Now in its 40th year, the school leverages its accrued experience and knowledge to teach aesthetic arts ranging from skincare to hair coloring. In the school’s salons, students practice on the public, cutting hair into elegant, customized shapes, texturizing strands with relaxers and perms, and highlighting nails with manicures, rather than with rings with built-in strobe lights. A testament to Shelton’s success in building his vision, he was even able to develop a weekly show for PBS about the beauty industry.
Nothing can break the bonds of sisterhood, especially when they are stitched together. At 3 Sisters Quilt Shop, Sherry, Shawn, and Chandra combine their individual talents to create ready-made quilts and instruct others on how to craft their own patterned coverings. The sisters adorn beds with fabrics that include Civil War reproductions, calico, and vintage. They also make custom t-shirt quilts from customer's old t-shirt collections. The also host classes on how to make your own t-shirt or sun bonnet Sue quilts, and stock craft rooms with scissors, rotary cutters, sewing bags, and cutting mats.
What began as a small studio with five enthusiastic dance students has transformed into a full-fledged company that's educated thousands and won multiple awards along the way—including a Certificate of Congressional Recognition. Today, Strictly Street Salsa has a whole team of instructors that has danced its way across the likes of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Spain, and Rome and is ready to introduce students to new cultures through the art of dance. The studio offers classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced dancers in both salsa and tango and hosts dance workshops that blend Latin dance with various cultural elements, including African movement, gypsy music, and good old-fashioned American screaming.
