Ginny and Mark Taylor spent their college years chasing artistic pursuits—she majored in fine arts, while he tinkered with wood, clay, and stained-glass projects. As the owners of IDEA Studio, the Taylors combine their artistic expertise with a passion for working with children, a concept that’s given way to sessions where kids and adults can practice their beloved crafts or sample new disciplines. During age-appropriate six-week KidzArt sessions, youngsters from pre-K to middle school use more than 60 mediums such as watercolors, clay, and clocks melted in easy-bake ovens to construct two-, three-, and four-dimensional works. IDEA Studio also hosts personalized sessions for homeschooled children, one-week summer camps, and Kidz Nights, where youngsters enjoy themed lessons while snacking on healthy foods. Adults, meanwhile, can take their own artistic journey in classes and workshops with subjects that include drawing, stained glass, and sculpture, or they can work on long-term projects during open studio hours.

Hilton Head Island,

The artists at Wine and Canvas awaken their students’ inner Rembrandts and Van Goghs with classes that pair a featured painting with specialty cocktails and wines. The mobile studio’s monthly calendar includes themed classes in which instructors expound on the nuances of painting Parisian street lamps, Japanese flowers, or Venetian cityscapes. The master painters—many of them local artists—provide step-by-step instructions while students mimic each stroke and periodically dip their brushes into glasses filled with crimson cabernet. Each of the studio’s various drink-friendly venues boasts a specialty libation selected to incite creativity or conversations with fellow painters. When the artistic frenzy concludes, students return home with a finished masterpiece large enough to conceal any wall safe or mirror portal.
