  • Healing Hands Therapy Center Columbia
Aquarium maintenance might seem like a strange background for an expert in neuromuscular therapy and deep-tissue massage, but that's exactly how massage therapist Lynne Luckow got her start. She decided to change careers after reading about the health benefits of massage and went on to study anatomy, physiology, and medical massage at Aesthetics University. She opened Healing Hands Therapy Center in 1993 and continued her training with renowned professionals in the field of alternative medicine. Eventually, she grew her practice to the point where she was working 12 hours a day, six days a week, roughly the amount of time it takes to give a full-body massage to a really big whale. Luckow knew it was time to expand: the center is now home to eight highly trained massage therapists, who earned it nominations in CityVoter's Best Massage category in 2011. In addition to performing massages, Luckow promotes physical and emotional healing with Ayurvedic counseling and meditation. She has further rounded out her team with licensed acupuncturist Brenda Sherman, who holds a Master of Science in acupuncture and oriental medicine.

  • Sweet 185
Sweet 185?s dedication to natural ingredients is apparent in its organic facials, which rely on plant essences, and its holistic massages, which use herbal oils. The same can be said about its hair removal treatments?rather than rely on chemical-laden waxes, Sweet 185?s experts hark back to the ancient Egyptian technique of sugaring, using an un-heated paste made simply of sugar, water, and lemon to remove hair. Because of this excellence, they have been included in USA Today's Top 10 Spas in Charleston. Meanwhile, the spa's oxygen therapy treatments have caught the attention of both the Charleston Mercury and the Moultrie News. Inhaling four to five times the normal amount of oxygen in the air while reclining in the spa's leather zero-gravity chairs is said to promote healing and heighten memory, and is far easier than doing aerobics in space. After their treatment, guests can peruse Sweet 185 boutique, where staff have handpicked gifts and goods ranging from natural chocolates to jewelry to organic sunscreen. There, visitors will also find Angel Rox clothing made with organic cotton and low-impact dyes, Jurlique creams and lotions that are never tested on animals, and Nadina bath towels, made with sustainably grown bamboo rayon.

  • Soca Day Spa
SoCa Day Spa’s treatments gather natural ingredients from all ends of the earth, lavishing skin with everything from moor mud and shea butter to Napa Valley grape seeds and seaweed algae. The spa’s experts clear pores and fight signs of aging with a slew of facials, and expand their scope to treat entire bodies with body scrubs, including the shea-butter salt glow, which leaves skin as radiant as a newborn lighthouse. Their wraps detoxify bodies and slim silhouettes with warm cocoons enhanced by coffee oils and clay masks. In addition to the spa’s buffet of skincare treatments—which also includes waxing—it relaxes muscles with massages. Its signature massage blends Swedish, therapeutic, and deep-tissue techniques, whereas prenatal kneadings ease the stress of constantly carrying a child and its matching luggage set.

  • Seabrook Island Wellness
Mary White believes in the power of movement to rehabilitate both bodies and minds. As an alternative health expert who has been practicing for almost 20 years, she relies on an integration of yoga, massage, and water movement therapy to put clients on the path to wellness. Her programs are entirely inclusive, welcoming yoga beginners to experience the same restorative poses that have benefitted athletes and irreparably tangled acrobat pairs. Inside the studio, a blend of styles—including Kundalini, Bikram, and Vinyasa flow—merge with Pilates and muscle-specific stretches. The combination of motion-based techniques works to combat pain and recurring ailments as it hones enough mental focus to defuse a bomb while stressed out by the fact that you’re in a cartoon in the first place. Mary strives to dispense her teachings to walk-in students as well as specific therapy groups, including Alzheimer's patients and single women in need of support.
