What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? We aim to provide something different, creative, delicious and exciting for area residents and visitors to Talkeetna, Alaska. Flying Squirrel Bakery Café is a deli-style eatery serving all kinds of delicious sweets and hearty, wholesome foods. A variety of pastries, freshly baked artisan breads and creative savory items are available to locals and visitors year round. Our bakery delivery program, from November to April each year, brings fresh bread, pastry and gluten free goodies to customers and fans in Willow, Eagle River and Anchorage.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business? Sometimes, Alaskans and travelers want something different than a hamburger on white bread. We are proud to offer a bit of something for everyone in a comfortable, artistic space in the woods just outside of Talkeetna. And we try hard to make food and business decisions that keep in mind our employees, our community, and the planet.

What do you love most about your job? Watching children look through the pastry case glass, excited to try something that looks so yummy to them from their perfect perspective at eye level with the goodies! Connecting with people from all over the state of Alaska, the country and the world who have stopped in a remember "The Squirrel" as a warm, friendly place full of deliciousness. And, most of all, working hard and creatively to utilize local food resources as much as possible including produce from our Talkeetna family farm.

What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer? Customers frequently say our black brownies and our ruggelach are "to-die-for", that's a satisfying compliment! Having folks all over the state of Alaska recognize and seek out Flying Squirrel products is what makes us want to share the love beyond Talkeetna.
