Even in the midst of roaring rapids, it's easy to spot the bright purple kayaks that have become the signature of Purple Hayes School of Kayaking. But you generally won't have to look for these kayaks within the white waters of British Columbia's scariest rapids; since the school's founding in 1986, it has catered primarily to beginners looking to get their feet wet in calmer waters. Once you're ready to take on a stronger current, the school offers more advanced courses with a low student-teacher ratio. Introductory courses teach the basic strokes and strategies necessary to make it safely downstream, while instructors ramp up the difficulty in intermediate courses by balancing an egg on each student's head.
