We open the Body with a comprehensive offering of different types of yoga for any point in the human life: From womb, through infancy, childhood, teenage years, motherhood/fatherhood, and adult years. What sets Daruma Yoga apart from others? Every class you’ll be sure to receive your daily dose of Vinyasa Krama. Vinyasa Krama means intelligently sequenced so one pose builds safely to the next. Daruma Vinyasa Krama Yoga practice is beneficial because it helps students to align themselves with the flowing and evolving nature of the universe, rather than being caught in the mindset of seeing each asana as a separate event that’s disconnected from the rest of the practice. Your practice will feel natural and refreshing as your body gradually opens in flexibility and builds strength as the practice progresses. Your teachers have all studied injury prevention and alignment practices that have been proven in studies of yoga and physiology to be the safest forms of movement and body mechanics.
Every class is sequenced Ayurvedically. Ayurveda is yoga’s sister science, which is still used as a form of medicine and healing in India. It has been developed over 5000 years into the holistic and incredibly effective medical system that it is today. Ayurveda is an ancient medical tradition from India. The term is derived from the Sanskrit ayur, meaning “life” or “longevity,” and veda, meaning “knowledge” or “science.”
The concept of Ayurveda is based on two major principles. The first principle is that the body and mind are interconnected, and the second principle is that the mind is powerful enough to heal the body. The body is cured of illnesses only when one’s awareness of the self-expands.
Ayurvedic medicine and Daruma Yoga are closely associated. They both find their roots in the Vedas. Yoga is the practical side of Vedic teachings and Ayurveda is the healing side. Ayurveda aims to keep the body and mind balanced so that the individual remains healthy, and Daruma Yoga is an art of body-mind coordination that ensures physical and mental fitness as well as enhances one’s spirituality.
The body is a combination of three doshas, or “energies.” These doshas are vata, pitta, and kapha. Every individual has one dosha that is more dominant than the others, depending on the prakriti, or “natural constitution,” of the person. Factors that influence the doshas include age, diet, and climate.
Daruma Yoga practice influences the balance of the three doshas. Choosing the right poses based on the personal constitution will help practitioners maximize the health benefits of yoga. The vata dosha governs the nervous system, so those with vata constitution will practice yoga poses that promote calm. The pitta dosha governs digestion and organ function, so those with pitta constitution will practice yoga poses that are cooling. Kapha dosha governs body fluids and the movement of nutrients so those with kapha constitution will practice stimulating yoga poses. We integrate yoga philosophy and spirituality into every class. By not ignoring the 8 limbs of yoga for just asana (physical practice) we feel we are teaching what the sages and rishi’s intended for this practice. Not only will you be purifying your body, you’ll be presented with ideas that will start to change your life. Lastly, in that vein, we integrate meditation/concentration technique into each class for the whole yoga package.
