About Wayside Waifs
Since 1944, Wayside Waifs has been providing care and shelter for homeless animals. In 2003, they introduced a new offering specifically for owned dogs: the Bark Park. The five-acre off-leash dog park, for dogs of all breeds and sizes, is a canine oasis within the city. It’s designed as a safe place for dogs to frolic, bond, and socialize. In 2016, the Courtesy Comfort Station was added in the park, featuring restrooms, hot and cold beverages, outdoor picnic tables, a paw wash, and more.
The Bark Park is just one of Wayside Waifs' contributions to Missouri's animal population. Every year, nearly 6,000 abandoned, abused, and homeless animals enter Wayside Waifs, incapable of surviving on their own. They're injured or sick, mothers with babies, or orphans too young to feed themselves. But the shelter offers relief, taking in many and even finding temporary homes for the youngest and most vulnerable with foster families who care for them until they're old enough and socially ready to be adopted.
Animals temporarily living at the shelter are treated to a lot of amenities. Dogs of all sizes go on lengthy walks around the 50-acre campus, hear soothing music indoors, and play in an agility park; while cats lounge on towers in the sun room, sleep on plush beds in kennels, and receive socialization with volunteers. As a result of this loving treatment, the animals are happy and healthy once it's time to move in with new families. Families can return to Wayside Waifs to take advantage of the center's many facilities. And to become better pets and pet parents, behavior and training classes are available throughout the year. Visit their site to find out about how to become involved with the shelter.
