When I attend the Florida theater, I feel as if I've entered a time warp and have returned to the theater of my youth. The theater was built in the 1920' and feels like a movie palace. My parents took me to them in the 1950's When I was 16 I ushered at the Keith's in N.Y. There are less than a 1/2 a dozen around today. To top it off some of the greatest talent can be seen at the Theater. The prices are reasonable, there isn't a bad seat in the house and the staff is very welcoming. We're mighty fortunate to have this theater in Jacksonville. It's a safe area and the parking is reasonable and you can even get free parking on the streets.

Beautiful venue...fine example of 1930's-40's architecture. Go see something here...the price of admission is worth seeing this historical theatre. Elvis Presey played here in the 50"s!

Love the Florida Theater- best place to see a show in Jacksonville! It's basically a giant old gorgeous, historic, movie theater and not a really bad set in the house! The only things at all disappointing about the theater is that there are not enough (ESPECIALLY WOMEN'S) bathrooms, and the venue does not recycle plastic, metal or glass. How is it possible an event like One Spark managed to recycle, and a less than 2000 seat business does not?!?!

The seating in the balcony is very cramped and tight. Otherwise it is a great venue :-)

From Our Editors

When it opened in 1927, the Florida Theatre was the largest of 15 cinemas in downtown Jacksonville. Today, it's the city's last surviving vestige of that era's iconic architecture. Designed by New Yorker R.E. Hall and Jacksonvillian Roy Benjamin, the venue is a prime example of the Mediterranean Revival style, with a ceiling covered in glittering stars and a six-story proscenium arch. And even as the entertainment industry shifted towards television, the Florida Theatre survived by hosting interactive game nights and concerts from underground artists, including Elvis Presley. The space was renovated In the early 1980s, and today it returns to its entertaining roots by hosting live events and classic film screenings.
