New England Sailing Center, Newport

Since the days of the Mayflower, sailing has been an integral part of identity for generations of New Englanders. Many of these residents first found their sea legs thanks to the training programs of the New England Sailing Center. From their marina on the waters of Newport Harbor, instructors at this US Sailing-accredited school lead classes covering the operation of crafts from keelboats to yachts. When they're not quizzing aspiring crew members, they also lead group on sailing excursions along the Rhode Island coast.

• Sailing Certifications: As a fully accredited sailing school, the New England Sailing Center prepares students for all facets of onboard life. In addition to courses in crewing and skippering keelboats and bareboat yachts, the school also offer specializations in everything from coastal navigation to offshore passage to marine radio communications.
• Tours and Charters: Experienced mariners can reserve daily or weekly charters of one of the school's yachts or catamarans. For those looking for a less hands-on sailing experience, the center runs three-hour sailing tours of Newport Harbor, many of which happen against the backdrop of a picturesque sunset.
