Tulare County Renaissance Faire, Visalia

Based in Tulare County, the Guild of Saint Mortimer educates people about life in 16th century Europe—especially in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The organization's volunteers work year-round to accomplish that goal, but come springtime, their efforts really shine during the annual renaissance faire. The faire, which has been delighting visitors for more than 27 years now, features a full weekend of period-specific entertainment and activities at Plaza Park. Here are a few things to expect if you visit:

• Entertainment: Actual jousting matches are among the weekend's highlights, pitting knights against each other in realistic battles twice daily. The faire also features a boisterous battle pageant, as well as multiple stages buzzing with live acts fueled by audience participation.

• Guilds: Volunteers go to great lengths to assemble their costumes and transform into educational, yet entertaining 16th century characters. They roam around the faire offering glimpses into the courtly life, while demonstrating period crafts and other activities.

• Vendors: Sword shopping isn't as easy as it once was—unless you're at the Tulare County Renaissance Faire. Here vendors sell wares they've crafted themselves, including everything from soap and body products to jewelry.
