In neighborhoods such as Egleston Square, where many residents are challenged by economic need and more than half of youths speak a primary language other than English, public-school students are struggling to keep up with science education standards. Testing scores suggest a broad gap in science understanding between students in urban public high schools and many of their suburban counterparts. 826 Boston helps students bolster their writing skills and achieve personal and state-mandated educational goals—including those in science—through efforts such as school tutoring, educational field trips, after-school workshops, and summer camps.

826 Boston's Summer Science & Writing Camp “Leeches, Tarantulas, Millipedes & Sea Serpents, Oh Yeah!” teaches students entering grades three through seven the techniques necessary to craft clear and informative written works and conduct thoughtful scientific projects. Most of the camp's youths come from Egleston Square. For the month of July, these children tackle the scientific method and scientific writing in hands-on lessons and field trips. Alongside guest scientists from MIT, the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, Northeastern University, and other premier institutions, students discover the wonders of processes such as mummification and forensic investigation. The four-week camp, which boasts a student-to-staff ratio of 2.5:1, helps students acquire not only a greater depth of knowledge but also a keener ability to communicate what they've learned.

Join G-Team and donate $10 to help improve underserved children’s scientific learning and writing skills. If G-Team members raise $500, one Boston Public School student will get to attend 826 Boston’s Summer Science & Writing Camp. Each additional $500 raised will sponsor another student.
