Just like Mom used to say: "If it looks good enough to eat, I bet it's from that delicious sweet store next to the old gin mill. No, not that one. I'm talking about Anodyne Coffeehouse, where I buy all my artful eats and store them in my chest freezer next to my year-supply of spinach quiches." And Mom was always right. For $8, today's Groupon gets you $16 worth of tempting treats and coffees for $8 at Anodyne Coffeehouse. The cozy corner store, which provides a laidback alternative to impersonal chain coffee shops, has vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes featuring locally sourced ingredients and a kids' menu.
Anodyne uses real dishes and compostable containers, and it only features coffee from top local roasters, including Peace Coffee, Great River Roasters, and MorningStar Coffee from Brazil and Mexico. The coffeehouse's breakfast menu features the specialty Anodyne oatmeal (organic oats cooked in apple cider with pears, wild rice, craisins, raisins, pecans, and brown sugar with half-and-half or soy milk, $4.85) and a variety of waffles, including banana-pecan ($6.25). The lunch and dinner menu includes everything from sandwiches to vegan selections. The grilled triple cheese is oozing with a trifecta of dairy bedded between two slices of multigrain and served with chips and a pickle ($5.50). To quash comfort food cravings, try the mac 'n' cheese, homemade with cheddar, swiss, and parmesan cheeses ($6.95), or vegan out with a vegan plate full of veggie chili, greens with balsamic, and grilled vegan cornbread ($6.75). Anodyne also serves Sebastian Joe's ice cream if your sweet teeth require sweet attention.
The friendly caffeination station features open-mic nights, live music on first Fridays, and complimentary WiFi. Accommodating hours mean you won't have any difficulty finding a prime time to redeem your Groupon; stop in Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
10Best lists Anodyne as one of the best places in Minneapolis to enjoy coffee or dessert, praising the attractive ambience:
- Since 1996, Anodyne has served great Minneapolis coffee, inspired community, and lured in visitors with its urban, neighborhood feel. All are welcome here, from hipsters to families, and with locally roasted organic coffees accompanied by flaky pastries, you’ll find it hard to leave. – 10Best
- Anodyne actually means a source of soothing comfort. That is what I thought when I went to this coffee shop/restaurant. I had a curried turkey sandwich, served with homemade kettle chips, which tasted marvelous-very original, flavorful and healthy. – dick0338, Citysearch
- I've had grilled cheese sandwich that was fantastic, made with their waffle Iron, and scrambled eggs made with their espresso milk frother. Both fantastic! Eco-conscious but not preachy. This place is one of Minneapolis' best kept secrets, I think. – wideopengate, Citysearch
