The Be a Hero to a Hero 5K takes place Saturday, September at 3 p.m. Participants are encouraged to dress in superhero costumes, and there will a costume contest with cash prizes. Awards will also be handed out for the best times. Complimentary snacks, water, and hot chocolate will be available.

Festivities continue later in the day at Finn McCool’s in Crystal Lake. The race benefits A Warrior’s Mind, a nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans transition to civilian life with mental-health and financial assistance, plus other services.

Be a Hero to a Hero 5K

Everyone's a superhero at Be a Hero to a Hero 5K. At least, everyone's encouraged to run or walk the race dressed as one, with capes (or, in Nightcrawler's case, a tail) fluttering behind them. Great getups pay off at the after party, where awards go to the best costumes and the fastest runners. The biggest win of all, though, is that the superhero-themed event benefits A Warrior's Mind. The nonprofit organization works to help real-life heroes—military veterans—transition back to civilian life.
