What You'll Get
The epicenter of every summer gathering is the grill, with the Uncle Sam¬–look-alike contest and volleyball games played with attractive-looking mannequins in a distant second and third. Harness the earth-rattling power of barbecue with today’s Groupon: for $85, you get admission to one five-hour competition-level barbecue-cooking class (a $175/person value) from Big Jim’s BBQ in San Rafel. Classes are held every Sunday on Francisco Boulevard West in San Rafael.
Combining modern barbecue with southern influences, Big Jim’s BBQ's newly created class teaches neophyte chefs the ins and outs of grilling. Led by award-winning barbecue guru Jim Modesitt, the class includes all food and supplies, turning cooking novices into the belle of the barbecue with dishes like baby-back ribs, pulled pork, rib-eye steak, filet mignon, salmon, shrimp, and more. Budding barbecuers will learn to cook on a charcoal grill, gas grill, and smoker, as Jim will walk the grillers through how to use injections, dry rubs, marinades, mop sauces, brines, and homemade-barbecue sauces. Students can take home the meaty meals for an after-class dinner or proudly hang up their creations on the refrigerator door.

About Big Jim's BBQ
Big Jim’s BBQ entrances diners with a menu of tempting contemporary and barbecue cuisine arranged by chef Jim Modesitt. Like the annual westward migration of wood-smoking grills, the sauce-slathered bill of fare unites gourmet California treats with rustic southern cooking traditions, pairing juicy pulled pork, chicken, ribs, and brisket with hearty risottos, traditional cornbreads and beans, assorted cheeses, and crostinis. As clients sup on the tasty bounty or enroll in courses to learn the dark arts of cookcraft from the kitchen’s professional chefs and caterers, rich flavors and aromas lavish the nose and palate with a sensory celebration of fine food.
