Electric Motors: From Pole to Pole
This track prides itself on its electric go-karts. Read on to learn about the technology that powers these state-of-the-art engines.
Whereas gasoline engines generate power through combustion, electric motors have something much less explosive humming inside: magnets. Indeed, a pair of magnets provides all the force needed to fuel a fast-paced go-kart without giving off pollutants such as noise and exhaust, making electric engines ideal for indoor tracks. At the heart of each electric engine is a metal rod attached to an axle that is suspended between two magnets of opposite polarities (positive and negative). By itself, the rod is useless, inertly suspended between the magnets. Coil a wire around the rod, though, and run a current through it, and it transforms into an electromagnet. Each end of this electromagnet—called an armature—also has a positive or negative charge, so when the positive end lines up with the positive pole of the suspended magnets, they repel each other, causing the armature to rotate around the axle and turn the wheel.
Halfway through the rotation, the battery switches the polarities in the electromagnet so that the ends of the permanent magnets continue to repel the rod, continuing the process over and over in rapid succession. All in all, this deceptively simple process creates more than enough torque required to propel go-karts around the track and send Deloreans hurtling through time.
