Before sports, the only way to make the body produce adrenaline was to juggle soldering irons or trap wild animals underneath wet newspaper. Today's Groupon gives you a more comfortable way to excite your cellular infrastructure: for $35, you get a beginners' stand-up paddleboard lesson at Captain Kirk's (a $69 value) in San Pedro. This Groupon is valid for lessons held at the Cabrillo Beach Park location.
Led by a staff of experienced waveriders, Captain Kirk's provides introductory stand-up paddleboard lessons that allow students to experiment with superaqueous travel while whittling their middles. The 90-minute lesson starts with a short on-land tutorial that includes a safety orientation as students simulate proper board stance and the latest dance trends in Atlantean discos. With the logistical foundation laid, you'll move to the water to practice paddling techniques and changing direction in the flat-water bay while encountering marine life such as fish, birds, seals, and armies of sentient sea pickles.
Most lessons occur on the weekends, but as there is no fixed schedule that has been carved into a nearby park bench, customers may call Captain Kirk's with a preferred time and, if the ocean permits it, the lesson will be scheduled. On the day of the lesson, students meet their instructor at Captain Kirk’s shop to pick up the included paddle and board, and while wet suit rental is available for a $10 fee, students are encouraged to bring their own or to build one out of reclaimed yoga mats.
Although he climbed the corporate ladder at a sprinter's pace in his young life, Kirk Robinson understood the only place he belonged was out on the ocean. He was known to his coworkers as a superior business mind⎯that is, when they actually managed to find him at his desk and not at the beach windsurfing. So, after reading The Road Less Traveled and Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow, Kirk found the inspiration to start Captain Kirk's Inc. in 1992. He then quickly gathered a team that also possessed his passion for watersports, including his kiteboarding wife, Kitty, and set up shop.
Today he and his crew show others how to get the most out of the ocean through kiteboarding, windsurfing, and standup paddleboarding lessons. Additionally, Captain Kirk's retail includes all the supplies needed to master those three activities. Completing the trifecta, Kirk also owns CK's Beach Resort in La Ventana, where guests can bask in the beauty of aqua waters, a private beach, and luxurious lodging while experiencing everything from kiteboarding and standup paddleboarding to windsurfing, sportfishing, and scuba.
