Lewis and Clark were both hobbled during their great expedition—Clark from resentment at his second billing and Lewis from a Lego slipped into his hiking boot by Clark. Dennis Dickson, a professional fish-and-wetlands biologist, teams up with his son Mike to lead rafting explorations of the abundant river wildlife and marvelous scenery of western Washington’s Skagit River. Groups of 6–12 visitors float through Skagit River Valley while searching for bald eagles known to make homes in the treetops along the river in the hopes of swooping down to catch a spawning salmon or a migrating toupee. Drift through a wilderness landscape of rolling, forested mountains and spy on schools of trout swimming around runs of determined salmon fighting their way upstream. As groups float along, Dennis marinates brains with knowledge about the river’s history, ecosystem, flora, and fauna.

Dickson Flyfishing

A father-son team, Dickson Flyfishing guides and teaches fly-fishing to all levels of anglers on Olympic Peninsula waters, Puget Sound rivers, and many eastern Washington rivers. Conscious of their environmental impact, they lead eco-rafting trips throughout the year on the Skagit, Sauk, and Queets Rivers, as well as fishing trips for steelhead, cutthroat trout, and salmon with scales made of gold. More adventurous clients can embark on winter fly-fishing trips for tarpon on the flats of the Caribbean or three-day campouts on the Grande Ronde River. Additionally, scenic rafting tours bring visitors up close to wildlife such as eagles. Dickson Flyfishing also runs a virtual fly shop, where they sell their own line of equipment.

Customer Reviews

It was a great class! The location was a bit far for us though.

Mike was a great instructor. I had come into this class with a small amount of experience and knowledge with my spey casting. He was able to teach me the double spey, help my snap T, and also offer knowledge related to fly fishing in general. I would suggest just a bit more time on the water working actual casts, but overall a great course.
