Before the U.S. Postal Service invented the Pony Express, Americans had to rely on shiftless prairie dogs and mental telepathy for long-distance communication. Mount a more reliable method of getting from point A to point B with today's Groupon: for $15, you get a 30-minute private horseback-riding lesson (a $30 value) from Equine Makeovers at Stanwood Equestrian Center in Stanwood.
Relying on a combination of intuitive and traditional horsemanship methods, Equine Makeovers' trainer April Henry imparts riding lessons to equestrians of all skill levels, teaching them how to control and respect a horse so that rider and steed can come together as a team. Based on her seasoned assessments of students' experience, Henry can lead in-hand, round-pen, or full-on riding lessons, giving curious bipeds the chance to harness the power of galloping hooves. Instruction takes place at Stanwood Equestrian Center, which boasts, among other amenities, outdoor and indoor arenas, a 60-foot pen, a cross-country course, and a movie theater in each stable stall screening National Velvet on a continuous loop. Each student must wear boots with a 1-inch heel and don an ASTM-approved helmet. Equine Makeovers will provide the latter for riders who don't already own one.
