Provincetown, Massachusetts: Thriving Arts Scene and Gay-Friendly Community on the Tip of Cape Cod

Provincetown—known affectionately as “P-Town”—is the “fist” at the northernmost tip of the Cape Cod “arm.” Artists have been drawn to its picturesque, remote setting for more than a century, including painter Charles Hawthorne, who helped found the Provincetown Art Association & Museum in 1914. The creative community continues to thrive today. You can see works from past and current artists in the galleries along Commercial Street, which rival some of Boston’s best. The town has also become one of the most popular gay and lesbian destinations in the country. It hosts the legendary Carnival Festival, an over-the-top, come-as-you-are party that takes over the streets every August.

Before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, they spent five weeks in what is now the Provincetown Harbor, where they signed the Mayflower Contract and first encountered Native Americans. The Pilgrim Monument memorializes this landing. On a clear day, you can see to Boston from the top of its 252-foot tall tower. Other noteworthy historical sites: MacMillan Wharf, one of the town’s only remaining original wharves, and the Old Harbor Life-Saving Museum, which houses old rescue equipment.

At Race Point Beach, located on the Cape Cod National Seashore, you can watch sailboats and the occasional whale drift by on the Atlantic. Herring Cove beach, on the bay side of town, offers calm swimming waters, and spectacular sunset views.
