Potomac, Maryland: Scenic Suburb of Washington D.C.
For being so close to the nation's capital, this area is remarkably scenic thanks to its location along the Potomac River. About 10 miles south of the hotel, Great Falls Park draws hikers to the Billy Goat Trail, a 4.7-mile trek that winds past boulders and crisscrosses the Potomac. Be prepared to do some rock-hopping, and hit the trail early to avoid crowds.
The attractions of Washington D.C. are a short drive or train ride away. The National Mall stretches 2.5 miles east from the Lincoln Memorial, past the soaring Washington Monument, to the U.S. Capitol Building on the other end. Across the Tidal Basin is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, which features a series of waterfalls, sculptures, and inspiring quotes from the 32nd president. While you're town, be sure to tour the monuments after dusk, when they’re lit up.
