Frequently referred to as the "Niagara of the South," Cumberland Falls is home to one of the rarest natural phenomena in the world. On certain nights when there’s a full moon, a lunar rainbow arcs over the mist of the waterfall, forming a pale, somewhat eerie sliver of light. Conditions have to be just right for the moon bow to appear, but the nearly 70-foot cascade is majestic under any circumstances. It’s the undisputed headliner at the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, where both a rustic lodge and freestanding cottages tucked into the Daniel Boone National Forest provide waterfall gazers with a comfy spot to hit the hay.
The Dupont Lodge houses 51 rooms amid solid hemlock beams, knotty-pine paneling, and massive stone fireplaces. A renovation in 2006 left the rooms looking more modern than rough hewn, with bright splashes of color on the walls and other contemporary accents. Two-bedroom cottages come equipped with all the comforts of home, including full kitchens as well as porches or patios outfitted with grills. The cottages feature interior wood trim, and several have fireplaces.
True to its name, the onsite Riverview Restaurant is lined with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Cumberland River valley. Diners dig into Southern dishes such as catfish and hush puppies. As supporters of the regional growers' organization Kentucky Proud, Riverview chefs use local meats and produce whenever possible. A large observation deck offers fresh air and sweeping vistas of the river and its wakeboarding otters.
Corbin, Kentucky: Forested River Valley with Renowned Falls
The area surrounding Cumberland Falls is a nature lover's paradise. Popular activities include fishing, horseback riding (once the stables open in May), and bird watching. Several species of wood warblers fly through the area on their way north to Canada. Seventeen miles of hiking trails wind throughout the state park; they range from short half-mile paths to the 10.8-mile Moonbow Trail, which begins at the falls.
